In grad school, I wrote a series of short stories as part of an experiment in self-publishing. This was 2011, so e-books were still relatively new, and there weren’t a lot of resources for editing, formatting, cover design, etc. It took a long time to get the collection where I wanted it, and I was fortunate enough to have a mentor who read each story and provided extensive critical feedback, which was incredibly useful.
Recently, I’ve been revisiting some of my older fiction, as cringe-inducing as that can be, and occasionally I come across something I’m still proud of. This collection has many flaws, some of the writing is a bit clunky, and I probably would have ended a couple of the stories differently were I writing them today, but going back and revising everything feels like trying to alter the past. I’m content with how these turned out, and the few folks who’ve read them have had mostly good things to say. I still feel like I’ve come a long way since this collection, but instead of pulling it down and burying it in a drawer somewhere, I’ve decided to give it a facelift.
So, if you like cyberpunk neo-noir crime fiction with a splash of horror, you might want to give these a try. My thought at the time was a mash-up of Sin City and Total Recall with shades of Blade Runner and Aliens. There’s enough explosions, suspense, and over-the-top violence to satisfy even the most die hard scifi/action fan. For the re-release, I kept my rewriting to a minimum (I only corrected a few typos and polished a sentence or two), ran the Word file through Vellum for professional formatting, and gave it a shiny new cover.
If this catches your eye, give it a shot. For less than the price of a cup of coffee, you get 30,000 words of thrilling, pulpy scifi goodness. I can’t promise you literary gems, but you’ll certainly be entertained!
Still not sure? Here’s the blurb (which I am quite proud of):
Explore a domed colony plagued by high-tech gang warfare, rogue nanotechnology, and a virtual underworld ruled by the deadliest criminals in the Solar System. Welcome to Cydonia City. The future is waiting for you…
